  1. What is Add Comment?
  2. The existing mail_to_web system allows users to post messages into designated areas using email. The add comment tool is an extension of this system, and allows users to add to messages already posted in the area.

Comments can be added to the original message:

These positions are indicated by _, or by an icon of your choice. This is actually a link which when selected will open an email box addressed to the corresponding file, ready for you to enter and send your comment.

The comments are shown with a blue background, to distinguish them from the original text.

  3. Why Use Add Comment?
  4. The add comment tool can be used to add to existing messages, without repeating the whole of the original message. Your comment can be placed directly above or below the section of the original message to which your comment refers. It can be used to offer opinion on a certain paragraph, or to expand on the meaning of a certain phrase. Alternatively, it could be used to add additional information, such as related web site addresses, or to inform people that the information in the original message has now changed. It could also be used to add introductory information to the beginning of the file, explaining the context of the article.

In addition to your own comments, the tool can be used to add attachments to the original file. This could be some related text that you had found elsewhere and wanted to add, or it could be a picture attachment or diagram which would help illustrate the original file.

The abaility to add comments also allows users to develop their own Web Calendar areas. An example of this can be found at Return to Index

  5. Can I Add Comments to a Comment?
  6. The Add Comment routine can be applied within existing comments, so that new comments can be added to the top, bottom or between paragraphs of an existing comment. The messages are displayed with the same color background, but are displayed within the borders of the previous comment. The order of messages is therefore recorded by their arrangement in layers. e.g.

This comment has been added to the end of an existing comment. It also has a blue background, but its border is within that of the original comment.

  7. How Do I Add a Comment?
  8. You can add a comment by displaying the appropriate message, and selecting the icon marking the position at which to add the comment. (From the index of files in the area click on the message you wish to add the comment to.)

Within the message you will see the symbol _ (in some areas a different icon may be present) indicating the positions at which messages may be added. Select the position at which you wish to add your comment.

The icon is actually a link which opens an email box addressed to append the corresponding file. The subject heading for your comment is by default Re:original message subject. You may change the subject if you wish. You can enter your comment in the main text dialog. This can be plain text, or you can attach a file.

If you change your mind and do not wish to add a comment to this position just close the email box and start again.

  9. Can I Change or Delete a Comment?
  10. If you make a mistake before you have sent your comment via email to the area you can just close the email box and nothing will change.

If you send the comment to the area and notice a mistake you can delete the comment from the area. You can do this by selecting the icon (or a similar icon) at the top right corner of the comment.

Note: If you delete a comment which has other comments inside it these too will be deleted.

If you delete a comment and want it to be restored to the area again you can click on the icon (or a similar icon) at the top right corner of the edited area.

  11. Can I Add Messages and Comments without Opening my Web Browser?
  12. If you subscribe to the area messages and comments posted in the area will be copied to your electronic mailbox. You can therefore view all messages in the area directly via email without opening your web browser.

Note: to subscribe to the area you must set the emailcopyparameter in the indexformat.html file to "on" and add your PH/LDAP alias or email address to the mailquery parameter. See http://www.choral.org/admi/util/help/help_on_indexformat.html for more information.

The messages copied to your mailbox also contain 'live' html so that the add comment tool will work from within each email message (just select the add or delete comment icons and send the mail as before).

  13. How Do I Make Add Comment Work in a New Area?
  14. The Add Comment Routine will only work for areas in which the indexformat parameter is set to "On". Files already in the area before this parameter is set to "on" will not be appended (only new files arriving in the area when this parameter is "on" will have links to append the message).

  15. Can I Change the Display Controls for Add Comment?
  16. Mail Headers

The mail header information will be displayed before the main body of each message if the parameter "MailHeader" is turned on. If turned off, they are hidden with HTML comment characters but can be read by examining the "View Source" in Netscape.

    Email Application

The Add Comment Routine uses the Mailto:URL protocol which by default opens a "Netscape Messenger Mailbox" email window. To change this so that the email is sent using Eudora requires the installation of a small piece of freeware. This is explained in more detail, and can be downloaded, at: http://www.mango.human.cornell.edu/kens/Software.html#MailTo .
