Founded in 1962 as The Singing Boys of Houston, Houston Boychoir continues to provide boys in the Houston metropoitan area with an opportunity for vocal music study and choral performance. The choir presents concerts throughout the city and is regularly featured with major performing arts organizations. It has appeared in several Houston Grand Opera productions, including Hansel and Gretel, Othello, and Mefistofele, and has performed many times with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, most recently in the highly praised 1994 performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach.
Hosuton Boychoir has represented the City of Houston and the State of Texas during annual concert tours that have taken it to cities throughout North America. The choir has made three transatlantic tours, visiting Austria, Belgium, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Scotland, and Switzerland. It was the first American boychoir invited to participate in the International Festival of Boychoirs held in Pozman, Poland in 1989. Their acclaimed appearances at this event were broadcast throughout Poland and the former Soviet Union. In June of 1994 the choir completed a highly successful two-week concert tour of Taiwan, the Republic of China.
With over thirty years of performance history, the choir has established a reputation of artistic excellence and continues to strive toward this goal. The musical repertoire is widely varied, drawing on literature from all periods of music history and representing many styles and languages, from medieval chant to contemporary musical theater and more. Through the mastery and performance of these materials, the choristers develop musicianship discipline, confidence, and a loving understanding of art.
Membership in the Choir is available to boys with unchanged voices who have satisfied the audtion requirements. The gererosity of our corporate friends and individuals throughout our community make many opportunities available to our choristers, including scholorships, wardrobe assistance, and an annual concert tour. If you would like to help in this endeavor, your tax deductible contributions to Houston Boychoir are welcomed and appreciated.
