CHORUS INFORMATION ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Founded in 1989, by Stephen Roddy contact, The Houston Children's Chorus involves over 250 children in grades 3 through 8. Children are selected to participate in the Chorus by annual auditions.

The purpose of the Chorus is primarily educational, in that it teaches children to achieve high artistic standards through choral singing and performance. An equally important aspect of the Chorus is the nurturing and growth of discipline, teamwork, self-control, and self-confidence.

The uniqueness of the Chorus is the fact that rehearsals are held in various rehearsal sites around Houston and its suburbs, including The Woodlands, Kingwood, Sugar Land, and West Houston. A dynamic inner-city program involves minority or under-served children in Houston's Third, Fourth and Fifth Wards. The Chorus is divided into four levels: Preparatory, Apprentice, Concert and Chamber Choirs.

The Houston Children's Chorus has performed concerts in New Zealand, Hong Kong, Russia, Italy, the Vatican, and New York's Carnegie Hall. They have performed for President and Mrs. George Bush on eleven occasions, including the 1990 World Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations, the 1992 Republican Convention, the 150th Anniversary celebration of the Smithsonian Institute, and numerous ribbon-cutting ceremonies. The Chorus is frequently featured with the Houston Masterworks Chorus in performances of major classical works, and soloists from the Houston Children's Chorus have performed with the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Theater Under The Stars, and Alley Theater. The Chorus was featured in eight performances of the Broadway touring production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" in Jones Hall. In August of 1998, the Chorus performed on national television in Russia, and in September of 1998, performed for 80 world leaders in the opening ceremonies of the 17 th World Energy Congress. In April of 1999, the Chorus performed with Celine Dion in Houston's CompaqCenter. The summer of 1999 was a highlight of the Chorus history, as members performed at Mass at the Vatican in Rome, and at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.

Fred Bock Music Company, of California, has printed over 38 children's anthems as part of the "Houston Children’ s Chorus Choral Series," with well-over 600,000 copies in print. The Chorus has been featured in recordings for music publishing companies, major recording labels, and radio and television commercials.

The Houston Children’s Chorus is known throughout Houston and the State of Texas for its versatility in being able to perform all types of music, from classical to pop. The Chorus is constantly in demand for weddings, gala fundraisers, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, church services, as well as corporate and civic events. It is estimated that well over 750,000 people heard the Chorus in live performances during the 1998-1999 Chorus season. It is the goal of the Houston Children's Chorus to make the Chorus accessible to every child in the Houston area, regardless of race or economic status.

Chorus members pay an annual tuition. Additional funding comes from performance fees and ticket sales from five major concerts, as well as individual, corporate and foundation grants. The Chorus is funded in part by a grant from the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris County, and funding from the Texas Commission on the Arts. Scholarships are available upon application, for talented children who need financial assistance in order to participate in the Chorus.

The Chorus is not affiliated with any organization, school district, of religious group. It is a non-profit organization, incorporated under the laws of Texas.
