The Houston Children's Chorus announces its Galveston Project , to be held July 9-16, 2000. The event has become an annual project of the Chorus, and involves 150 members from Houston working side-by-side for six days with under-privileged children of Galveston. The week-long, all-day choral and choreography workshop is held in preparation for a final concert at Galveston's 1894 Grand Opera House, on Sunday, July 16, at 4PM. Additionally, the Houston Children's Chorus performs free concerts nightly at various churches and other performance venues.

The Chorus has received a commitment from the Boys and Girls Club of Galveston to co-sponsor the week and to help provide children for the project, and from the Galveston YMCA to involve additional children. Although the project is open to all Galveston children in grades three through six, emphasis will be placed on recruiting minority and needy children. Transportation for the participants from Galveston will be provided each day as well. Additionally, the Chorus has received commitments from Sacred Heart Catholic Church for daily rehearsal space and from the Galveston Independent School District for bus transportation and publicity to the elementary schools.

We consider the Galveston Project to be the highlight of our Chorus year! Not only does it give our children an outlet to perform the music that they have learned all year, but it also gives them a unique experience in sharing their talents with children who would not necessarily have the opportunity to perform with a "professional" arts organization. Furthermore, it enables our chorus families to be strongly involved in the volunteer work needed to insure the success of this project.

Sponsors for this year's Galveston Projects are needed. Sponsor of previous Galveston Projects include The Kempner Fund, Tillman and Paige Fertitta, Enron, Exxon USA, The Kenneth and Linda Lay Family Foundation and El Paso Energy.

Tickets for the final performance on July 16, may be obtained by calling 713.650.3800
