The purpose of the Houston
Children's
Chorus is primarly educational in that it teaches children to achieve high
artistic standards through choral singing and performance. An equally
importion aspect of the Chorus is the nurturing and growth of discipline,
responsibility, team work and confidence.
The affairs of the Houston Children's Chorus are managed by its Board
of Directors, which is made up of individuals from a cross-section of the
Houston community. The Board meets at least four times a year and
oversees financial and legal aspects of the Chorus. The Director of the
Chorus is ultimately responsible to the Board for the financial management
of the Chorus. The Director is responsible for all artistic and
management decisions.
The Houston Children's Chorus exists to musically enrich the lives of
the children, their families and the community it serves. This process
demands commitment. Within the Handbook are the policies that make the
Chorus an outstanding cultural arts organization in Houston.
Membership in the Chorus is obtained by passing an annual audition
during the month of May. In order to qualify for membership, a child
must be in grades 4 through 8 in the fall semester following the audition.
In other words, third graders are not permitted in the Chorus, nor are
ninth graders.
Open auditions for the Houston Children's Chorus Concert Choir and
Apprentice Choir are held in the late spring for children going into
grades 4-6. The auditions are held in various locations throughout the Houston area.
Auditions are additionally held for those existing HCC
members who wish to graduate to Concert Choir or Chamber Choir (through
eighth grade).
Regular office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Our offices are closed for a week following Christmas, and we have limited
office hours in the summer months. The office is mainly staffed by
volunteers.
