OPERA CHORUSES

On Labor Day Weekend 2003 the Houston Symphony Chorus will once again travel to Mexico City to present two concerts in collaboration with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, Maestro Jorge Velazco, conductor. This year’s tour features opera choruses and scenes from operas, in a concert that will be dedicated to the Houston Symphony Chorus. It should be a musically rewarding opportunity to explore some repertoire we have not visited for several years.

Cost Most of the expenses of this tour are being borne by the generous supporters of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería. Singers will be given a return airline ticket, we’ll have transportation to and from the airport, we’ll stay in a nice hotel, and good breakfast will be provided. Singers are expected to pay for other meals and any optional tourism costs in Mexico City. Because the Houston Symphony cannot pay for other expenses, we will collect a non-refundable $25 fee from all participants to defray other tour costs (including rehearsal pianists, phone calls, photocopying, tips for Mexico City bus drivers, etc.) Singers also will need to buy their own music (estimated cost: $27), which Tony Sessions will have for purchase at our first Mexico City rehearsal.

Refundable Deposit The HSC has contracted with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería to provide a chorus of 150 singers for these concerts. In past tours, living up to these contractual obligations has always been a challenge, with drop-out rates over the summer months reaching as high as 25% as people change their plans. It is even more of a challenge this year, when we are performing music which we have not recently presented in concert in Houston: it will be harder to get last minute replacements with this repertoire. Drop outs also create extra administrative work and costs. This is why we ask you to check your calendars carefully before completing the attached registration form. In addition, and based on the recommendation of last year’s tour organizers (Cheryl Whinney and Eduardo Garcia-Novelli) we are also instituting a $25 deposit, which will be refunded in September to all who participate in the tour.

Rehearsals and Attendance Policy Rehearsals will be held Tuesday nights starting June 24 and continuing through August. Regular attendance is expected from all participants.

Guests Guests are welcome on this trip but they will need to pay their own airfare and hotel expenses. We do not yet know what these costs will be, and it probably will be a while before we can give a definite answer. However, last year, the airfare was about $350, and the cost for a non-singer’s half of a hotel room was about $55/night. Guests would also be charged the $25.00 organization fee and the refundable deposit.

Registration Deadline To ensure a spot on the tour, please complete the attached form as soon as you are sure of your availability. After May 20 we will open up registration to new members who join at the June auditions, and to other “friends of the chorus” whom we will recruit as necessary. We will continue to accept tour registrations after this, but registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis, with a certain number of slots set aside for each voice part.
