2007 Chorus Notes 13-Sep-2007

(from Charles Hausmann)

Dear Colleagues,

I wanted to report that we are making good progress on Symphony of Psalms. Thanks to all of you who were able to attend both rehearsals this week! Not having a whole week between rehearsals really speeds the learning process. To keep that momentum going, I am making a slight change in next Tuesdays rehearsal schedule: the men will have a Stravinsky sectional at 7:30, ahead of the general Stravinsky rehearsal (as was announced last night). The general Stravinsky rehearsal starts at 8:30 pm. Remember, ALL the rehearsals next week will be held in the rehearsal room at Jones Hall, beginning with the Mid Summer Nights Dream piano rehearsal that will start promptly at 6:45 pm.

I would also like to ask everyone to take some time this week to review the following passages, paying attention to notes and to the diction issues that I have been stressing. These sections need to be solid in every voice in order for the ensemble to perform at the highest level:

Movement II Measures 29-60

Movement III Measures 72-98, 150-162

Finally, as mentioned last night, our assistant director, Richard Robbins, has prepared a very useful and scholarly (and humorous!) guide to Latin Pronunciation for singers, including a phonetic guide for the Stravinsky text. The guide is attached with this e-mail. As he says, you should read this even if you think you have this mastered: there are a few tricky rules! (In case anyone has trouble with the attachment, the guide is also posted on the chorus web site at http://dummy.address/grou/hsc/gen/chh9c_sop_pronunciation_guide.html)
