Directories typically group Web sites by subject which often makes finding what you're looking for much easier. Two of the most popular directories are Yahoo! and The Whole Internet Catalog.
Yahoo stands for Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle. Started by 2 graduate students in 1994, Yahoo has become one of the most popular sites on the Web. It includes well over 50,000 links and according to the founders, receives about 200 new su bmissions every day. Like other directories, Yahoo is organized into subject categories, each category indicating the number of links contained within. It also includes an easy to use search engine.
There are several ways to use this directory which contains about 1000 links. You can begin at one of the 13 high level categories such as Arts & Entertainment, Daily News, or Travel, each of which is further subdivided. You can also scan their All S ubjects listing, or if you want to see every listing in the catalog, use the All Catalog Entries list. Their Top 50 list shows Web sites with the most visitors and is updated weekly.
Lycos, developed at Carnegie Mellon University, is probably the most popular Internet search engine. Its robot searches the Web every day indexing new pages, and then updates the database weekly. More than 4.5 million pages have been cataloged. Lyco s includes two databases, the larger catalog with over 4 million Web pages and the small Lycos catalog with 4000 web pages.
